Officers were dispatched to the Bank of America location in New Canaan, located on Elm Street, at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, where there was a report of a suspicious patron who was attempting to unlawfully access a bank account to withdraw $4,000.
New Canaan Police Lt. Jason Ferraro said that employees of the bank did not approve the transaction, and the suspect patron - later identified as 60-year-old Bronx resident Eugene White - left the bank in the direction of a parked blue Mercedes that was in front of the bank.
Ferraro said that the driver of the Mercedes - 21-year-old Jaden Tumma, of the Bronx - abruptly spread away, leaving White behind before the two were reunited near Starbucks on Park Street.
Officers were able to track down the vehicle, which was occupied by Tumma, White, and 22-year-old Eric McCarn.
According to police, the investigation led to a bank employee identifying White as the fraud suspect, and detectives discovered three Florida driver’s licenses and multiple credit cards in the area that were allegedly thrown from the Mercedes as the three attempted to evade police.
All three men were charged with:
- Three counts of unlawful completion or reproduction of a credit card;
- Three counts of conspiracy to commit identity theft.
- Conspiracy to commit larceny.
White was also charged with three counts of criminal attempted identity theft.
Tumma was also cited for these vehicle and traffic violations:
- Disobeying the signal of an officer;
- Operating an unregistered motor vehicle;
- Illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance;
- Illegal operation of a motor vehicle with an unlawful license.
Tumma and McCarn were both released after posting $25,000 bonds. White is being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Court on Thursday, March 24.
